Pete Bodary is known as an experimenter. The associate dean of undergraduate education and clinical associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology was an early adopter of gameful learning pedagogy. He developed a virtual patient chatbot for students to practice clinical assessments in a safe environment. Bodary’s latest artificial intelligence tool is a Socratic tutor that uses course materials to help guide students to the appropriate learning objectives.

Bodary, who developed these tools alongside his team of former graduate students Giselle Aronoff, Samantha Hsu, and Qingqing Yan, looks to technology in pursuit of better instruction and student engagement. Bodary spoke with Evan Ogg Straub, associate director of learning experience design at the Center for Academic Innovation, about his embrace of innovation, how AI can promote critical thinking, and why it’s important to continue sharing his findings with fellow instructors.
